Introduction and aims :

The mathematics of the earth; the science of the collection, analysis, and interpretation of data, especially instrumental data, relating to the earth's surface. ( Oxford English Dictionary)

Geomatics Engineering is a modern discipline, which integrates acquisition, modeling, analysis, and management of spatially referenced data, i.e. data identified according to their locations.

  The Greek origin of the word geodesy means "to divide the Earth". Geodesy is the science of mathematically determining the size and shape of the earth and the nature of the earth’s gravity field. It deals with determining positions on the earth, on other celestial bodies, and in space and is known as an essential foundation for all geomatics applications.

  The field of geodesy and geomatics is comprised of different fields of study:

  • Geodesy (terrestrial, celestial, and orbital coordinate systems measurements, etc.)
  • Positioning and Navigation ( The ability to locate oneself on Earth and navigate over its surface)
  • Geographical or geospatial Information Systems (computer systems capable of assembling, storing, manipulating, analyzing and displaying geographically referenced information)
  • Remote Sensing, Photogrammetry and Image Analysis (how to extract useful information from images such as the location of objects in the scene as well as the geometry of them and Mapping (how to make the maps) using Photogrammetry (airborne photographs) or Remote Sensing (images taken by satellite sensors)
  • Land Information Management ( Managing information about ownership rights relating to land)
  • Geodesy and Geomatics Engineering students use a wide range of computerized tools and information to create detailed but understandable views of the physical world and our place in it for a variety of engineering applications; So, the mathematical and physical backgrounds are very important similar to most of the other branches of engineering.
